What is Disaster Recovery?
Sometimes referred to as DRaaS (disaster recovery as a service) or just DR (disaster recovery), it’s often talked about in conjunction with cloud backup solutions. But they are different, both in terms of what they do and how they do it.
Cloud backup is the actual copying of files and data for future restore. Disaster recovery is the process followed to get those files and data back up and running and your business operational again.
Disaster recovery has two key components:
- Recovery Time Objective (RTO – the speed at which systems can be restored)
- Recovery Point Objective (RPO – the point in time to which systems can be rolled back)
Cloud backups operate statically. Once you’ve backed up your data into the cloud, you’re able to restore from the latest version or from a retained version if you need to go back further. You can also search for individual files and data from within your latest backup library, or you can perform a full systems restore if needed. Backups are typically run overnight or outside standard business hours.
Disaster recovery makes a live copy of your systems into a secondary location. It effectively takes a “snapshot” of your systems at frequent, regular intervals, creating a virtual replica of your live systems. Disaster recovery allows you to prioritise which systems are restored first, so you can be sure your most critical data is back up and running as soon as possible.
As DR creates a secondary copy of your data, in the event of a complete failure you are able to connect to your secondary system and continue working in that environment while your primary environment is restored, minimising data loss and maintaining productivity levels.
